How long does it take to change accounts with the same bank?
I have a bank account with HSBC and I am changing it to a student account with HSBC as i am at uni. I was wondering how long this process will take? I am keeping the same account number and debit card and everything, just changing the type of account. Thanks in advance

Answer 1 :
Depends on how busy they are it might take 20 minutes it might take 40 minutes of waiting who knows.
Answer 2 :
You do not need to change bank, there will add your student account........Arrange for them to extend your facility to use your local uni branch....drawing cash etc.......Also my daughter arranged to have on line banking facility, which she found so convenient........All the Best...!!!

What are the possible ways someone could have hacked my account?
It was a Runescape account if that is of any relevance. I've got it back now. I've never told anyone my password and it's not a password I use with any other accounts.

Answer 1 :
Keylogger virus. It tracks the keys you press and saves them. :\
Answer 2 :
Keylogger. they can potentially send EVERY piece of vital information about your computer and what it accesses to someone.
Answer 3 :
Most people have a "System" in the process of making passwords and sometimes it is possible to make "Logical" guesses and hack the password. Other times it may be due to Trial and Error( by the hacker) entering of Known Common Passwords. For example many people use the word, "Password" as the password or if the PW must be a minimum of 6 characters so the password becomes-- "123456". Many people use their pet's names which can be very common, Fluffy, Buffy, Scotty,Scout, Spot, Lassie and so on...If the person who hacked you account knows you personally--then they can try to figure out your Personal System or they may know specific details such as Birth dates, Parent-Sibling names and so forth. Major Events become PWs too. The recent Tornadoes and Fukushima incidents are good examples. Suddenly, a lot of accounts have "Fukushima" or "Tornado" as the Password. Names of Celebrities and Characters from TV/Movies and Pop Culture are common Passwords. As suggested a keylogger could have been used but most hackers are out for Financial-Banking- Soc Security numbers and etc. They probably will not mess around with a Game Account(which is not to say it's impossible--more or less unlikely). A password cracker electronic unit can be used but most websites automatically will shutdown the account if 'Brute Force"(which that type of hacking is called)is used. In your specific case--it could have been a good guess or maybe even a logical Guess based on your User Name...For example if a person is a Huge Fan of Pokemon---then Popular characters names might be used.."Jiggly Puff, Ash Ketchum and etc. As a precaution you might want to use another computer and change your other account PWs.(in the event it is a keylogger ) Sorry about your experience and glad that it was resolved. I hope this helps.
Answer 4 :
It could have been a key-logger or maybe through security questions, a friend of mine hacked mine through those.
Answer 5 :
if you have entered the account on a shared computer recently then probably the computer you used had the key-logger program which tracks what your typing if not , then maybe because your using the same password for more than an account , maybe one of your other accounts was hacked and now your account in Runescape is hacked too because the password is the same

What could someone do with your bank account and routing number?

What could someone do with your bank account and routing number?
I had a little sheet of paper that had those 2 pieces of information while filling out something online. I was in a public place. It turns out I had lost that piece of paper with my bank account number AND my routing number for my bank. What's the worst that could happen?

Answer 1 :
Contact your bank or immedietly drain the money by transferring to another account in fear of losing cash.
Answer 2 :
That's on every check you write so you're getting into a panic about losing a paper with it on it? If your bank pays anything out without your authorization it's their problem.
Answer 3 :
Well, when you consider it is at the bottom of every check you write, there must not be much one can do with it unless they are very clever, then you go to the bank and they start a fraud investigation.
Answer 4 :
With this info they could kindly deposit money into your account, but that is very unlikely. You get the same info printed on every check you write. Edit - they probably couldn't deposit money after all - they would need your name too, and even that is on every check you write.
Answer 5 :
Pretty much what last 3 people said. It is on every check. I suppose if you are worried you could close it and open up a new one or see if the bank will put a warning on your account.

I am in financial difficulties but have some money in my savings account to pay for gas, electric etc. However the bank is threatening to take the money to pay a loan. Can they do this? These are British bank accounts and I have taken legal advice from Citizens Advice Bureau.

Answer 1 :
Yes they can certainly do this and legally too, unless there is no money in then they wont take it and make you go overdrawn. hth
Answer 2 :
no the direct debit would be set up for one of your acounts it would have nothing to do with the other accounts
Answer 3 :
Yes
Answer 4 :
You better move that money out of that account fast. The bank can surely take it by legal means if in your bank agreement states such. Remember all that fine print no one ever reads when you opened the account, and get in the mail now and then? We'll, if there is language in there that says to the effect that in the event of default they can debit your other accounts, and charge you a fee, then they can. They will also prob jack up your interest on that loan to a "default rate." You'll have to go back and read the fine print or open an account at another bank, withdraw cash and or write a check to that other account fast. You may also want to explore getting some immediate legal advice to deal with the bad loan.
Answer 5 :
Yes, a bank can take what you owe them from any of your accounts with them. That is why it is better not to have all your a/c in the same bank.
Answer 6 :
We were in a similar situation this past summer. My husband and I moved our money to another bank. We have no paper trail to link us to that bank. We are currently working towards closing the account where we owe the money. I don't know if your situation is possible unless you signed a contract or a document saying that they could take the money. I know that my bank took money from our joint account to cover an overdraft on another account. Just change banks. It's the first step. Then try to negotiate a payment procedure with your bank..AFTER you've moved your money.
Answer 7 :
Yes they can
Answer 8 :
yes they can, and there isnt much you can do about it unless you draw it all out and close the account

Answer 1 :
The money will stay in your Paypal account until you tell Paypal what to do with it. If you want it transferred to your linked bank account, log in to your Paypal account and click the "Withdraw Funds" button.
